Fun With Rice

Months and months ago, I made Phoebe an indoor "sandbox" with rice that I bought in bulk at Costco. I tossed a few measuring cups, funnels, and random toys in a tub with the rice... and then sort of forgot about it.

Phoebe wasn't really big enough to "get it" the first time I brought it out, so it's just sat neglected in the garage for the past few months. On Friday, we decided to break it out and have a little fun. We had a blast. We also made a mess, but Jake was happy to eat the (uncooked) rice off the floor for us, and the vacuum cleaner ate the rest.

For over half an hour, we played hide and seek with a cow. We poured, we sifted, we buried. And while we weren't doing anything special, it was a sweet time for us. It never ceases to amaze me how it's the simple things that I love best, that really make being a mommy wonderful.

And really, is it any doubt that we had a blast here?

Oh, that looks fun! I let my kids scoop and measure rice for me recently, and you would have thought I'd taken them to Disneyworld!

small pleasures, right?

That IS a great idea! I'm totally gonna steal it for us sometime!

This is a great idea! I love the idea of burying the items and then rediscovering them.

Have you heard of a bean box? Similar concept, but with those 13-bean mixes. I've heard of them used therapeutically for special needs children, but enjoyed equally by siblings. They're great for learning differences in shapes, colors, textures, etc!
